I got my Ring!
Yesterday evening Pat and I went up to campus to pick up our Aggie Rings. I've written a lot about the ring lately, so I just wanted to give you an idea of the Ring Day Process. At 7am students who are getting their rings can start picking up a number card. The way rings are handed out are by card #, so the sooner you get your card the earlier you get your ring. I think the # system started because too many students were getting in line at 6 or 7am and skipping all their classes during the day. Rings are handed out starting at 3pm by number, as I said. Since Pat and I didn't really want to be there during the busiest time (and the fact that Pat doesn't get home from class until 4ish) we went a bit later (we left the house at 5pm). I was shocked at the number of students still there. Because we arrived so late, we didn't need to get a number and we just walked into the big room where the rings are handed out and went to our designated table (the rings are split up male/female then by alphabetical order in chunks like A-E...). After we got our rings we utilized the free photo coupon we were given and stood in line for about 20 minutes to get our picture taken with our new ring. We'll see how those turn out in a few weeks. That's about it.....I went home and studied for an hour and a half until Jennifer picked me up and we went to Messina Hof. It was great! And then the studying continued.......
Preview: A&M v. #1 Oklahoma
Well, let's just hope lightning strikes twice. After shocking the college football world last season, knocking off the #1 OU squad 30-26, we're going to have a difficult time repeating. This year we'll be traveling to Norman, OK to visit the Sooners in their tough Memorial Stadium OU is ranked #1 in the nation in scoring offense (45.11 points/game), #1 in total defense (245.33) and #1 in passing efficiency (171.54). That's not conference rank, that's national rankings. They've scored 50 points or more 5 times in their 9 games, scoring a high of 65 against texas. Let's just say that A&M isn't quite as high in those same categories (scoring offense #44, total defense #81, & 58 in passing efficiency), and our record shows it (4-5). Obviously, as I've said in previous weeks, we MUST have some big plays early on in the game to get some momentum. We CAN NOT TURN THE BALL OVER like we have been. Basically, we need to be flawless. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it could be a long game. Field Position will be the key to the game. We're great on kickoffs (#4 in the nation led by my boy Terrence Murphy who is the #1 returner in all the land), but terrible on punt returns (#109 in the nation with 6.19 yards/return). OU's defense has the capabilities to just straight up shut you down. They are #1 in total defense (yeah, I already mentioned that), #2 in pass efficiency defense, #7 in scoring defense, #2 in pass defense, and #6 in turnover margin. That means they are really good. Their team speed is just numbing and their style of D is actually changing the way the game is played. Offensively, they're not bad either. They've got the leading Heisman Candidate taking every snap (Jason White) and the RB combo of Renaldo Works and Kejuan Jones is pretty good. Really, other than White, they don't have a superstar player to go to like Pitt has with Larry Fitzgerald but they know how to get the ball into the end zone (hence the average of 45.11 points per game). I'm predicting T-Murph to have another solid game but my go-to-guy tomorrow is RB Courtney Lewis (my candidate for Big XII Freshman of the Year). OU's rush defense is ranked a mere #18 vs. their #2 pass defense, that's why I picked C-Lew over T-Murph. If we can get the option play working, I think that will open up everything for us... ...and if we can score more points than the Sooners it would once again highlight a second straight season....

Cruz Jr. over Hidalgo?
I know I just spent a good bit of time on Wednesday explaining how I thought the Astros screwed up paying Richard Hidalgo so much for so long, but he did have a terrific year defensively to go along with a solid (but not even close to his 2000 season) offensive year. I will admit I was a bit surprised to see Jose Cruz Jr.'s name on the list of NL Outfield Gold Glove winners. It's almost an given that Jim Edmonds and Andruw Jones will go home with one, but usually the third OF award goes to someone that isn't quite as obvious. That said, I felt that Hidalgo would win the award this year for the third OF spot. He only made 4 errors and he led the majors in assists with 22! That's pretty impressive, so that's why I was a bit taken back with Cruz's honoring. Being from Houston, I really liked little Che-o. I went to see him play when he was at Rice, and I watched his little brother (Enrique) play at Bellaire HS. I was pumped when he was drafted so high in '95 and after his showing with Seattle in his initial call-up, I thought he'd turn out to be a superstar. Well, he slipped a bit over the years statistically and he kind of made me mad one day at the Ballpark in Arlington. I talked Jennifer into going to a Ranger's game and somehow got her to go with me early to watch batting practice. Apparently, Cruz made some sort of gesture to some guys standing behind Jennifer for them to send her down to the dugout so he could talk to her. I'm sure he didn't want to just give her an autograph. That's not really cool with me. Jennifer, being the person she is, just ignored him and came and told me. Needless to say, after attempting to hit on my girlfriend, I'm not a big Che-o fan anymore. Back to the story on hand.....So I wanted to see why Cruz won over Daggy so here are the facts:

Short & Sweet
I'm going to keep this like that....As you know, I have two tests tomorrow that I have been studying for since Monday. One will be very easy and one will be very difficult. I'm more worried about the latter of the two. I have my day split into blocks of time to help me manage my studying and everything else and since I got out of class 40 minutes early today, I'm using some of that "new" time to write this. I also have a block of time set aside because my wonderful fiancé is taking me to dinner at Messina Hof at 7:30 for a little break from the monotony of studying and to congratulate me for getting my ring. As for my ring, I don't physically have it yet, but I will be picking it up in a couple hours. I'm waiting for my roommate, Pat, to get home so we can go up there together. That's about it for now....I'll try to get an A&M v. OU preview up before the game, but with the craziness going around over the next 24 hours I can't promise.

Oh, Billy
I wasn't surprised to hear that Billy Wagner was traded. Not one bit. I was surprised how quickly it came into the off-season. Billy, Richard Hidalgo and Brad Ausmus will not be calling Minute Maid Park home next season. I know that Daggy and Ausmus still are technically with the Astros, but they won't be for long. How do I know this? Well, mainly because everywhere you look the media is screaming it. But, to quote Puff Daddy from early in his career, "It's all about the Benjamins baby." Billy had $8 mil coming in 2004 and either $9 mil or a $3 mil buyout for 2005. Daggy will be making $12 mil in '04 and either $15 mil or a $2 mil buyout for 2005. As for Ausmus, he's a free agent that I would love to have back, that will probably get a 2 or 3 year deal for $4-5 per. All of those things are bad for a team who doesn't like to add payroll.
Billy for Who?
I heard that a couple of times over the last few days. Officially, the deal was Billy for Brandon Duckworth and two minor league pitchers, Taylor Buchholz and Ezequiel Astacio. Another way to look at it is Billy for Brandon Duckworth a couple minor leaguers and $$$$$. Last year, Duckworth earned $325,000. Hopefully, those $$$$$ equals Andy Pettite or another #2 or #3 starter that the Astros oh-so-desperately need. Here are the players involved stats from the last 3 seasons (I'm showing the stats from the level where the player pitched the most innings each year):

After seeing that, I don't feel quite as bad about this trade as I did originally. We all know the Astros needed one more starter last year and the two kids they got seem to have good numbers for being so young...especially the K/BB. I do truly hope that Drayton doesn't just pocket the cash he saved, and he goes out to try to get an Andy Pettite or a Greg Maddux. Shoot, I'd take a risk and sign David Wells to a very heavy on incentives deal. Last year the Astros missed out on a 220 inning, 3.87 ERA, 18 game winner (former University of Houston pitcher, Woody Williams) because Drayton didn't want to hand out another $100K. Simply put, the difference between his wins and those of the guy who replaced him would have put the Astros in the playoffs. I hope Drayton learned his lesson with that.
Blindsided by "Flexibility"
The thing that does make me somewhat upset about the whole Astro scenario is this. Apparently the Astros management is suddenly concerned with their "flexibility" financially. Doesn't the team have to also sign the contracts that they hand out to players? When signing someone like Richard Hidalgo to a possible 5 year, $47 million deal don't they take into consideration their "flexibility" before signing the documents? I'd sure think about future "flexibility" before I inked a 32-year old 1st Baseman to a 5 year $85 million contract (that was how old Bagwell was when he signed his contract in 2000). Not that Bagwell isn't a great player, teammate, or community role model but most major leaguers peak between ages 28-32 not 32-37. You've got to decide if you're going to pay a player for his potential or for his past results and not get carried away with career numbers in situations like that. It just seems that they're trying to play off all this downsizing because these contracts they already signed just appeared out of no where. Even before we inked Jose Lima to his huge contract after his solid 1999 season, I was screaming "Don't sign unproven guys to long term, big money deals after one good season!"...I was 15 years old then. Then the same thing happened with Daggy. He busted out in 2000 and got paid. I screamed once more "Don't sign unproven guys to long term, big money deals after one good season!" Did anyone listen? No...unless you count my parents who couldn't help but listen because they were a captive audience. Derek Lowe (2002) , Luis Gonzalez (he's still a great player, but not the superstar he was in 2001), Edgardo Alfonzo (in 2000), Brady Anderson (50 HRs in '96), Jose Hernandez (2001)....These guys all had career years but did anyone honestly think they'd be able to produce at their peak season for long term? I didn't. I'm calling it right now, Jose Guillen & Esteban Loaiza will be next year's flops. I will say, however, I was wrong about Brett Boone. I really thought he was a one year thing, but he shoved it in my face (although I'd like to know how he got so strong so quickly....). This holds differently for a guy who is a phenom coming up or a guy who has a STUD rookie year (i.e. Pujols, Prior, Soriano, Ichiro, etc.). Someone like Dontrelle Willis needs to prove himself over a couple more years before I hand him the long term cash. I'm sure Dontrelle will turn out to be a fine major league player with a great media friendly personality, but he pitched over his head the first half of this year and showed everyone a bit of reality in the second half. You've got to be able to see pure, honest to God talent and not get caught up in the media or in out-of-the ordinary stats from a career .270, 16-20 Hr guy. If fall into the trap, then more likely than not you're going to get burned. I guess that's why every "arm-chair manager" doesn't get to make decisions like that....Do you think it's too late to change my major???? (Dad don't answer that)

The Aggie Ring
Here in Aggieland, getting your Aggie Ring is almost as important as graduating. Most of you probably noticed the counter I dropped up in the top left corner of the page (I wanted to do it about 2 months ago, but I just now figured out how to make the stupid thing count down), and according to that little thing, Ring Delivery is this Thursday, November 6th at 3pm! As a student, you can order your ring only if you have accumulated 95 total hours of credit with 45 of them being here at A&M. On top of that, you must also have a 2.0 GPR. Unfortunately, I was 3 hours short of ordering my ring at the end of this past spring semester, so I had to take summer school and I was able to order it as soon as school started up again this past August. The tradition of the Aggie Ring can be traced back to 1889, which is the oldest known ring found. Texas A&M has the highest percentage of students who order their ring (it's something like 82%) in the nation. The ring has 3 sides to it, the crown, the right shank and the left shank.
The Crown
Shield at the top of Ring: Illustrates protection of the good reputation of the alma mater. 13 Stripes in shield: Symbolizes the 13 original states and the intense patriotism of graduates and undergraduates of A&M. 5 stars in shield: Refers to the phases of development of the student: mind or intellect, body, spiritual attainment, emotional poise, and integrity of character. Eagle: Connotes agility and power, and ability to reach great heights and ambitions.
Right Shank
Star: Represents the Seal of the State of Texas, authorized by the constitution of 1845. Olive and Laurel branch that encircles star: Signifies achievement and a desire for peace. Live Oak leaves surrounding star: Means strength to fight. Ribbon that joins the Olive and Live-Oak leaves: Shows the necessity of joining these two traits to accomplish one's ambition to serve.
Left Shank
Ancient cannon, saber, and rifle: Symbolizes that the citizens of Texas fought for their land and are determined to defend their homeland. Saber: Also signifies valor and confidence. Rifle and cannon: Also illustrates preparedness and defense. Crossed flags of the United States and Texas: Reminders of the dual allegiance to nation and state. Every ring that is handed out will look exactly like the one shown above, except for 5 very small variations.
- The year on the ring--mine will say '04
- The name engraved on the underside of the crown
- The finish--There are two finishes, I believe. The one shown above in the pictures and a natural finish, which has no black inlay but is a brighter and shinier gold
- The carat of gold--10K or 14K
- Diamonds--I've heard that you're supposed to get a diamond added only after your 25th year reunion, but I've only heard that from one person
The ring is very expensive, and thankfully the Association of Former Students picks up half of the bill. Even with that help, it still cost $449.50 out of pocket...Ouch...
Ring Dunk
Now for the part that everyone is interested in....Ring Dunk... Although an unofficial tradition according to the school, Ring Dunking is very much a tradition with the students. Basically, once you get your ring you drop it into a pitcher of beer and chug (while being timed) 'til you kill the pitcher and catch the ring in your teeth. The fastest time I've ever heard was 13 seconds. Most students now-a-days dunk their ring at parties or at friends houses, but many still head over to the Dixie Chicken, the most famous bar in central Texas, to dunk their ring. Usually the Fridays after delivery day are loooong days for seniors. Since I don't drink, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I'm thinking maybe a non-alcoholic beer or maybe going to Swanson’s for some sort of sickening ice cream monster to dunk it in. Whatever I decide, I have a huge test on Friday (a special thanks to Professor Golla for that one), and so I'll be studying Thursday night and celebrating on Friday night.
Just so I stay out of trouble, all the info above (except for the stuff on Ring Dunk) was found at the Association of Former Students website....
The Importance of the Ring
The Aggie Ring has a different meaning to everyone. To me, it makes me feel like I'm truly an Aggie. I know that I've been here at school since August of 2000 and I know that I'm just as much an Aggie as anyone else who is walking around campus, but it's a symbol of accomplishment. I have been here for 3 1/2 years and I know the best places to park and I know which gate always has the shortest line to get into Kyle Field and I have crammed for tests and I have pulled all nighters for finals and I know which classes to take and which not to and I have stood in the freezing rain for the Bonfire Memorial Service in the middle of the night and I have taken crap from friends at other schools because their football team has beaten ours and I have stood my ground and not let anyone tell me my beliefs and morals are wrong and I know all the Ag jokes you think are funny but I've already heard and I have juggled 2 jobs, school, and a serious relationship and I have maintained my overall GPR (it's at a 2.9 right now and it'll be a +3.0 at the end of this semester) and I will graduate with a B.S. from the School of Engineering and I have been a leader in an organization that will one day be one of the premier on-campus organizations and I have been to every home football game (25 so far) and 2 away games and I have gone to 27 of 36 home baseball games plus 3 away games in one season and I have met and made friends and I have had a blast. The Aggie Ring is almost a signal that college is almost over and it's time to think about jobs and careers and how much money I'm going to have to live on when this free ride is over....thank goodness I'm going to take a victory lap and graduate in 4 1/2 years... But seriously, this ring is my common bond with every other Aggie who has stepped foot off this campus and into the real world. I've met people in Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Boston, Las Vegas, New York, downtown Houston, Detroit....and I've been able to have a feeling of security talking with them because I saw the ring on their hand and I knew we were part of the same family. That's what makes this school so great. It's not if you're a Republican or Democrat, or if you live on North Side of campus or South Side, or if you're in the Corps or you're a non-reg. Once we step off this campus, we're all on the same side and we all know a little bit about each other before we even shake hands. The Aggie Ring is just a symbol to remind me of what I've accomplished and what I've shared with everyone else who has ever gone to pick their ring up on Ring Day.
Dang that was a great post...

Really, I just don't care about any of the teams outside of those. Here is my reasoning behind my rankings:
#1 OU
They're undefeated. And they have stomped their two biggest rivals (tu & OSU). Unfortunately, A&M is next on their list. Bring on the Sugar Bowl.....
#2 Men of Sparta
I have not seen them play this year, but from what I've read and heard they clearly deserve this spot. Also, embarrassing the #6 team in the land on Sat. (Washington St.) is more impressive to me than FSU knocking off a poor Notre Dame team. Plus, their uniforms have the ultimate throwback look.
#3 V-Tech
The Hokies made my weekend a bit better after giving Miami a bit of their own medicine. They lost to a dangerous West Virginia team last week, who also came 8 seconds away from beating Miami as well. They can run the ball with Kevin Jones, Little Vick, and Bryan Randall and their defense just swarms you like my dog, Olsen, when you open a bag of chips. Frank Beamer is a great coach and his special teams still makes me drop my jaw.
#4 Miami
I wish I could drop them lower because after this weekend they don't deserve to be only one spot below the team that thwarted them. I was so shocked, yet happy to see them fall apart like they did emotionally at the end of that game. They really showed very little class, and as an announcer mentioned, couldn't handle what they've been giving out over the last two years...losses.
#5 LSU
I put them ahead of FSU only because I really can't stand the Seminoles. I know that is a bit childish, but it's my poll so I can do whatever I like. Their only loss came to Florida, but it came at home which really should put them behind the 'Noles.
#6 FSU
I hate FSU. I can't stand Bobby Bowden. I can't stand how their program gets away with anything they want outside of murder. The only loss they've been handed was by then #2 Miami, but it too was at home.
#7 Wolverines
I ranked 2-loss Michigan over 1-loss Ohio State simply because Ohio State hasn't had convincing wins. Michigan has lost twice, yes, but they were both away and to ranked teams and they lost both games by a total of 7 points. They have beaten 4 Top 15 teams (#14 N.D. 38-0 early in the season, #13 Minnesota 38-35, #10 Purdue 31-3, and #10 Michigan State 27-20) and that to me is more impressive than what OSU has done.
#8 Ohio State Buckeyes
As I mentioned above, I don't think that Ohio State's schedule thus far has shown that they're a better team than Michigan. They beat #19 Washington (28-9), #22 NC State (44-38), and #9 Iowa (19-10). They also lost to #22 Wisconsin (17-10) in Wisconsin. The Buckeye's remaining schedule will prove if Ohio State is for real this year or just hanging onto last year's national championship a bit too long. They play #15 Michigan State at home, #14 Purdue at home, and then #8 Michigan at Michigan. At the end of all that, we'll see who the best team in the Big 10 really is.
Adrian Peterson
I don't follow high school recruiting very closely. Actually, I don't follow it at all. For those of you like me who are in the dark, there is a kid from Palestine High School in Palestine, Tx who is pretty good. His name is Adrian Peterson, he's a running back and he's the number 1 recruit throughout the land. He's listed at 6'3", 210 lbs. and I've read several places he runs a 4.4 40 yard dash. I don't know much about his season this year, except he ran for 300 yards & 6 TDs this past Friday night....in the first half! He didn't even play the second half. Last season he had 246 carries for 2,051 yards and 22 TDs, averaging 8.3 yards/carry. He has not yet committed to any school, but I think Bob Stoops has a pretty good grip around him at the moment. As far as I can find, he's looking at OU, texas, Texas A&M, Arkansas and UCLA as his Top 5. I think that he's starting to wander away from us and the school in Austin, but I only know what I can find on Yahoo. If we don't get him, then I hope he ends up in Norman. I just wanted to fill you all in on this kid, because I was stunned by his stats.

Texas A&M 45 v. Kansas 33
Box scoreLet's just say I'm glad we don't have to worry about the situation I spoke of yesterday....
Offense
We showed up today! #16 Reggie had another spectacular game throwing for 259 yards on 11-of-18 passing with no INTs and one TD. He also ran for 71 yards and a TD. #25 Courtney Lewis busted out another big game (as predicted by me...and 60,000 other people) rushing for 120 yards on 26 carries and 1 TD (he also had 1 reception for 7 yards). I think C-Lew is going to be something special here at A&M...he may not leave with any big time records, but he's the back that we haven't had since I arrived here. My boy, #5 Terrence Murphy, had another very solid game picking up 72 yards on only 3 catches. He also had one kick return for 45 yards, which brings his season average to 32.07 yards per kick return....and if no one jumped from behind him, he moved into 1st place in the nation with that number after previous leader, Michael Waddell from UNC, had only 1 return for 21 yards bringing his avg. down to 30.91. #83 Tim Van Zant had a career game with 5 catches for 102 yards and a TD...not too bad for a walk-on, huh? Speaking of career games, #9 Earvin Taylor, #2 Jamaar's little brother, had one with 3 catches for 72 yards.
Defense
Well, 33 points is quite a few to give up to Kansas, but I'll take the W.We did exactly what I said we'd have to do to win, and that was contain Clark Green. We held him to 64 yards on 12 carries. What got us was Adam Barmann's first career start at QB. He was 25-for-37 for 4TDs, 294 yards and was picked once. I didn't see that one coming. #19 Jaxson Appel has proved to me that he is a total stud. Coming into this year, I didn't think that anyone would be able to replace Terrence Kiel (now with the San Diego Chargers), but thank goodness we have Jaxson. He once again finished #2 on the team in tackles with 8 (our other safety #23 Ronald Jones led everyone with 14). Jaxson now has over 100 tackles on the year, which seems like an awful lot. He plays Free Safety, which is basically the guy farthest from the spot of the snap, and his job is basically to smother the big plays that the 7 guys in front of him (the DL and the LBs) let slide right past them. Just think of how bad we'd be without the last line of defense saving us 100 times. Oh yeah, he also had a fumble recovery for a TD and another INT (that makes 4 on the year and 8 in the first 18 starts of his career). One more thing....he's only a Sophomore....
Other Thoughts
Attendance was weak! I know we aren't too great this year, and Kansas isn't really a treat to watch play either but 68,487 people is not enough. It was actually the lowest attendance I've ever seen at Kyle Field (I actually looked up every game to be sure), and it was the lowest attendance since September 25, 1999 vs. Southern Miss (65,264). It was also the lowest conference game attendance we've had since the Zone opened in 1999. That's just plain bad. Come on Ags, get up here for some games.....well you will because the only home game left is t.u. I know that Coach Fran knows more about football than I do, and more about play calling than I do. That said, I'm curious why we haven't been running the option consistently game in and game out. We ran it quite a bit today, not a lot but a good number of times, and it was pretty effective. We ran it against Pitt too and we seemed to move the ball up the field really well. With Reggie and C-Lew in the backfield it seems to me like it'd be pretty challenging to stop us. Throw #7 Jason Carter (former QB, current WR/RB) into the mix and I think we'd be just plain dirty. While on the topic of play calling, the short 5-15 yard pass came back for us today and by looking at Reggie's stats worked pretty well also. Just things I've noticed....
Reverse Those Changes
For those of you who looked at the site yesterday and tried to use the scroll-down menu I put up, I took it back down. Why? Because it didn't work. I don't know why, but it didn't. I have added the "What's New" link up there, which will be a quick little reference of what I've updated or added or changed on the site day-by-day so you don't have to search for every little thing. I'll throw my 2 cents in about the rest of the "Survivor Saturday" tomorrow....
