Preview: Texas A&M v. Missouri
Things can only get better for the Ags this week. Most people think we're just going to get blown out the rest of the season, but I feel differently. I think that we learned from last week's embarrassment and that we're going to come out tomorrow and try to change people's minds. Mizzou is led by their stud QB, Brad Smith who is not only their leading passer, but their leading rusher as well. He has over 1,000 yards & 12 TDs rushing already (after 9 games) and he has thrown 153-for-248 with 10 TDs and 5 INTs for 1,470 yards. His pass eff. is 120.76, which ain't bad. Their tailback, Zach Abron, is their second most deadly weapon, with his 760 yards and 10 TDs. Their receiving corps doesn't seem to have any one standout with 3 players over 23 receptions (Abron being one of those 3). The Tigers are, however, undefeated at home thus far during the 2003 campaign which doesn't fair well for the Ags who haven't won on the road thus far during the 2003 campaign. Defensively, Mizzou is giving up over 230 yards/game through the air and over 120 yards on the ground. Because of that, I think the Ags will have a good offensive day. I'm seeing another solid 60 yard day out of Courtney Lewis, and a 120 yard day from my boy, T-Murph. I'm going to say that Reggie snaps out of his funk and gets the job done in the air and on the ground with a 235 yard passing day to go with a 60 yard rushing day. The winner will be the team who's defense plays the best or the offense who turns the ball over the least (remember, we only had one turnover during the O.U. debacle).
Kick-off is at 11:30am CST, and the game is on Fox Southwest....
Going to H-Town
I'm going to be in Houston this evening and tomorrow, but I'll be back home Saturday night so I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get a game recap up and update my T-Murph stats (I still haven't included last week's 6 yards on 1 reception, but I'll take care of that when I update it tomorrow).....enjoy your Saturday....

it would be interesting to check up on the players from that now famous 2002

I think it's really interesting to see how these young fellas turn out. I have special interests in the later picks like Crowder (who went to Rice) & Knox (who I played ball against in high school). I'm really curious why Crowder didn't play at all this season...he was sparkling in 2002.... I could only find the signing bonuses for the top 100 players, but check out how they compared to the player taken directly before and directly after them:

You know what else is incredible? They signed their top 18 picks....and 25 of their top 30 picks....
I can't wait for the sequel to Moneyball, it's also by Michael Lewis and will be called Underdogs and is scheduled to come out 3 years from now.

That Boy E
As some of you may remember, my buddy growing up, Evan, is a walk-on for our football team this year. I mentioned during my post game review from the Pitt game that Coach Fran has suited up a ton of guys for our home games, and Evan has been able to suit up every home game since then. I took some pics during that Pitt game and two of them came out pretty well, so here they are:
Evan is #5....that's Coach Fran right next to him in the top picture....anyways, I thought that it was pretty cool that the pictures turned out so well....
My Award Winners
Everywhere you look, you're seeing each network and each media group rounding up their "experts" to tell you who they think this past season's MLB award winner are. I figure that I'm just as knowledgeable as some of the guys they ask, so I might as well throw in my two bits....

Most of my reasoning behind the Cy Young awards have been posted in the past, so I'm not going to go into any detail with those.....just click here for AL Cy Young and here & here for NL Cy Young reasoning (keep in mind the dates they were written, so excuse the non-100% current stats).

Those numbers are eerily similar! Really, it's a coin toss between the two statistically. I don't think that you should take into consideration the team the guy plays on, if they made the postseason, or how much he helped his team when you're determining ROY. I think that ROY is simply the best rookie in each league. That said, throw out all the NY media pressure that seems to aid Matsui's cause all over SportsCenter. Why don't we look at position? Berroa is a SS and Matsui is a LFer. Take into consideration each player's VORP (Value Over Replacement Position), Matsui's VORP is 22.5 vs. Berroa's 34.0.... Now, the debated "Should Matsui be considered a rookie after winning 3 MVPs in Japan?".....Technically, no, it does not hurt Matsui's rookie status, but maybe baseball should adopt something similar to the NHL where no one over a certain age should be qualified. That may not be the answer, but you see what I'm getting at....Anyways, I like Berroa so he's my pick....
NL ROY
This race shouldn't have even been close. It should be renamed the "Media Darling of the Year Award" since it went to Dontrelle Willis.

I think the numbers speak for themselves....in the 13 categories above, Dontrelle had 4 more wins, a lower BB/9, and less runs (not earned runs, runs)....and that is it. I'd take B-Webb any day of the week over D-Train....
NL MVP
I talked about this race back on September 23rd, so yall can read (or re-read) that for yourselves....
AL MVP
This....this I've heard some crazy names mentioned. Espn.com's experts listed the following players as candidates: David Ortiz, Shannon Stewart, Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada, and Nomar Garciaparra. I typed this in my September 23rd "Bonds v. Pujols" post:
MVP This is a term that can be analyzed in a few different ways. Is this the most valuable player to his team, the league, or is he simply the best player in his league? I think that it's a combination of the first and the third. As I've mentioned several times, the winner must either be hands down, with out a doubt the best player in the league (especially when there is no standout leader on a playoff team)--or--must be having a great year on a playoff bound team where he contributes almost to the point of them not making it without him. There is a difference between the Player of the Year and the MVP Last year, I felt that A-Rod was hands down, with out a doubt the best player in his league and was deserving of the MVP award. This year he's in the same boat--the Rangers stink, and there isn't really anyone with comparable numbers in the AL.
Let's look at his numbers vs. those of the other candidates ESPN.com gave us....

*team made the playoffs
Here is my elimination process....Ortiz, great year but you don't even come close to A-Rod (the only 2 things you're even 10 whatevers away from A-Rod in is SLUG and OPS), plus aren't you a DH????....Nomar, you're my boy at SS but your numbers also don't fall into the same category as A-Rod....Stewart, what the heck are you doing in this comparison?.... This leaves me with Posada and A-Rod. Posada is a catcher, which is a very difficult position. A-Rod is a SS, which is a very difficult position. Let's look at the VORP for each, shall we....A-Rod 86.3 vs. Posada 75.9....now RORP (Runs Above Replacement Position)...A-Rod 79.1 vs. Posada 58.4.... I've got to give this one to A-Rod....I think the Yankees would have finished in the exact same place without Posada plus, A-Rod is just better, plain and simple...
Eck Award
Yeah, yeah there isn't really a Reliever of the Year award, but there should be and that should eliminate the "Should a reliever be eligible for the Cy-Young award?" question. In the NL this goes to Eric Gagne, hands down. I don't think anyone has ever had the season he has out of any bullpen.... In the AL this is a bit more tricky....most people would give it to Keith Foulke who led the league in saves and also had a 9-1 record. And I guess I will too. As much as it pains me, I wanted to give it to a Yankee, Mariano Rivera, but his numbers just weren't that great.

The reason I was so dead set on not giving it to Foulke is because I think he cost my boy, Tim Hudson a Cy-Young. Of his 5 blown saves, the first 4 of them were games that Tim Hudson started and was in line for the win when he handed it over to his "closer". Add those 4 Ws to Tim's stats and he's got 20 wins a 2.70 ERA an All-Star appearance (those 4 blown saves kept his mid-season wins too low so he didn't make the squad; see July 1st & July 7th) and some hardware....
This is Just Evil
They're auctioning off the Bartman Ball....the ball that brought me so much pain and emptiness....I hope they lose money on the whole thing...

Texas A&M 0 v. #1 Oklahoma 77
Boxscore Ouch. We took a pretty good thumping on Saturday. I'm going to now say that I think the program has bottomed out, and luckily we can only go up from here. I really don't even care about the Mizzou game next Saturday; we're going to have to beat texas if we want to make this season somewhat memorable. I may sound mad, but really I'm not....I'm more embarrased. I have read on some Aggie chat boards some pretty mean and terrible things about our team and even Coach Fran and then even Coach Slocum...show some love for your fellow Aggies. I've said since before the season even started, we're building for the 2005-2008 seasons. Check out our schedule and our opponents and you'll see why we're going to be recieving a BCS bid in a few years. Does anyone remember how OU was before Bob "The Conquerer" Stoops arrived in 1999? They were 12-22 in the 3 years prior to his arrival and went 7-5 in his first season. Since then they have gone 45-4 (2000-current). We were 21-15 in the same number of years prior to the arrival of Fran and we're currently 4-6 against the most difficult schedule in the nation....just something to think about... I think the most important thing is that we (Ags) can't give up and start bickering amongst ourselves. I know that I'll watch the Mizzou game on T.V. next Saturday and I'll be at Yell Practice on Thanksgiving evening, and I'll be in the stands the next day waiving my 12th Man Towel screaming my head off until the game clock reads 0:00, regardless of the score, win or lose. As Aggies we owe it to our team to support them through thick and thin....that is the entire basis of the 12th Man....
Offense
I must have missed it...
Actually, I didn't miss one play of the entire game because I was just hoping we would get something started. We had a total offense of 54 yards. We punted 8 times in the first half and 11 times overall. Our leading rusher was #1 Derek Farmer with 21 yards. Our leading reciever was #83 Tim Van Zant with 20 yards. My boy, T-Murph, had one reception for 6 yards. I will say in his defense that he was robbed of a huge play when we ran the flea-flicker on the 3rd and 1 during the first drive of the 2nd quarter. The refs ruled the ball incomplete but the replay and each announcer disagreed strongly. He also was WIDE OPEN after burning his defender on the first play of the game, but #16 Reggie overthrew him for the 286th time (that was a hyperbole) of the season. Those were the big plays that I talked about in my A&M/OU Preview. #25 Courtney Lewis was held to 16 yards on 8 carries and I realized why my "Pregame POG" would not be....because C-Lew excels when he can break to the outside and get some room, but OU's defense is SOOO fast that there was never even a chance for that to happen. The one good thing is we only had one turnover....it was run back for a TD though....
Defense
- Jason White was 16-of-18 for 263 yards with 5 TD passes
- Mark Clayton had 7 receptions for 166 yards and 3 TDs
- On two of OU's TDs & one that was called back, there wasn't even an Aggie anywhere near the ball
- EVERYTHING ABOVE WAS IN THE FIRST HALF ALONE
At some point you just have to tip your cap to the opponent and say, "Well done." OU knew our weaknesses and exploited them every play they could. They only had to punt one time and they didn't have any turnovers. 2 of OU's RBs had +120 yards and 3 TDs between them to go along with their backup QB's 79 and 2 TDs. As mentioned previously, Jason White threw for 263 yards and 5 TDs and didn't even take a snap in the second half....
Other Notes
- A&M didn't cross our OWN 40 yard line the entire game
- The game was A&M's worst loss in the history of the school (77 point differential)
- A&M had more penatly yards (63) than offensive yards (54)
- The 3 TD receptions by Clayton tied for the most in school history by an opponent, he tied Pitt's Larry Fitzgerald (2003), texas tech's Nehemiah Glover (2003) and Baylor's Lawrence Elkins (1963)
- OU had 23 more points than A&M had offensive yards
- 636 yards given up by our defense was second worse in school history behind only this year's texas tech game (669 yards)
- 54 yards of total offense was lowest since early 70s
- ABC announced it's Chevy Player of the Game and since they had to give it to one player from each team, they gave it to our sole defensive standout this year, Jaxson Appel, who had a season low 8 tackles at the time they announced it (he finished with 10 tackles, hence not a season low)
At least our band is awesome.....
What is really scary is that Oklahoma's next opponent is Baylor in Norman....we beat Baylor 73-10, so is OU going to win 150-10?????
More Crazy Upsets
Wow, a 3rd huge weekend during this year's college football season and this one pretty much finished off three top teams. #3 Florida State lost to unranked Clemson, #5 Virginia Tech lost to #21 Pitt, #7 Miami lost to #17 Tennessee and #10 Iowa lost to #14 Purdue . This leaves Oklahoma and TCU as the only undefeated teams and it leaves USC, LSU, & Ohio State as the only one loss teams left. Right now, a trip to the Sugar Bowl is USC's to lose.... The remaining schedules....
- USC
- November 15th at Arizona (2-8)
- November 22nd vs. UCLA (6-4)
- LSU
- November 15th at Alabama (4-6)
- November 22nd at #19 Mississippi (8-2)
- November 28th vs. Arkansas (6-3)
- Ohio State
- November 15th vs. #10 Purdue (8-2)
- November 22nd at #5 Michigan (8-2)
My preseason USC vs. Michigan pick for the championship may be completely gone, but I'm looking pretty with one of those teams....and if all three teams lose one more game making OU the only non-2 loss team (b/c TCU doesn't really count), I don't have a clue how it all works from there....Michigan still has reasonable a shot....
