Two things to apologize for....1) Not posting in a few days. 2) Completely neglecting professional baseball.
Well, I've learned through the years that apologizing when I'm really not sorry is a BAD idea, so I probably shouldn't do it here (fellas take note).
The reason I haven't posted lately is because I have been working like crazy (although I did crank out a guest spot at another website with regards to Cory Patton and ZachJack—I’ll post a link when it’s available). For those of you who don't know (probably most of you), I'm currently interning with the Premium Services division of Aramark at Minute Maid Park.
Tonight is George Bush's (#41) 80th birthday and there is a big (actually HUGE) birthday party being thrown for him at MMP. I think the guestlist is somewhere around 5,200 and include people from all walks of life....Michael Gorbichov, Amy Grant, Dennis Miller....Anyways, since the Astros are on their huge road-trip for the season we've been working on setting up this party for 3 or 4 days (I've been working on it since Wednesday). So that's where I've been.
As for neglecting MLB and not writing very much on the draft....tough. It is the NCAA play-offs and frankly there isn't anything that pro baseball can give me that could one-up a field of 64 teams fighting for their lives, 16 advancing and having to fight for their lives once again, and then taking the 8 survivors and throwing them into the same ring.
As I'm typing this up, I've got Game 1 of the Long Beach St v. Arizona Super Regional on the TV. Jered Weaver is insane....but I've said that before (as has 99.99% of the baseball world).

This evening, however, is the only game 1 that I care about.....Texas A&M v. LSU at Alex Box Stadium, 6pm CST.
I've got a couple of things to mention on the Cubs front....
First, Mark Prior made his second start of the season on Wednesday afternoon v. the Cardinals. He got shelled.

I would almost kill to see that game....but I'm working that evening in the warehouse at the park, so I won't get to see any of it. If you don't happen to be working, I'd buy my tickets ASAP because Roger has sold out every game he's started in (none of which against a pitcher of Mark Prior's status). For those who might be working, you can either Tivo it or if you're not as technological as others you can just tape it because it will be televised on ESPN.
I do have tickets for Wednesday night, which should be Maddux vs. Redding.
I mentioned the other day that I was excited that the Cubs drafted Stanford OFer, Sam Fuld. I thought that this would be an appropriate time to post his final stats this year with Stanford since their season is now over. [HOLY COW! Arizona just took a 9th inning lead over Long Beach State after trailing 5-2 at the start of the inning--Weaver was already out of the game]

We're up against the Mighty LSU Tigers in a best-of-three winner moves on, loser goes home.
The #10 ranked Tigers are 44-17 on the season after going 18-12 in the SEC. They rolled through their Regional last weekend with 3 quick wins to boost their home record to 27-9 on the season (.750). Overall they are 6-4 over their last 10 games played.

Wow! I'm still on a high from the game. I'm so pumped about us going to LSU, but I'm totally bumed out that I won't be able to go. You might remember that LSU was where I wanted to go for Regionals, but I've got to work until 9pm on Saturday night and have to be back at work Monday morning at 7am. I suppose that's what happens when you start to grow up.
Luckily for me though ESPN will be broadcasting the Super Regionals and we're slotted for coverage (although different regions will see different games if they overlap). Here's what it looks like so far:
Saturday June 12th: Game 1 - Texas A&M v. LSU, 6pm (ESPN2) Sunday June 13th: Game 2 - Texas A&M v. LSU, 5pm (ESPN2) Monday June 14th: Game 3 - Texas A&M v. LSU, 12pm or 6pm (ESPN), if necessary times are CSTI'll have my family tape the Saturday night game for me, I'll watch the Sunday game live, and I'll hope for the 6pm game on Monday b/c I get off of work at 3pm....if not I can always tape it too.I'll have a big Super Regional Preview up probably tomorrow, but Thursday at the very latest.
I got my pictures back yesterday from Regionals. Not as many great shots as I had hoped for, but some of them turned out pretty cool. I have these as HUGE 1800x1250 jpgs as well so if anyone wants one that big email me and I'll try and figure out a way to get it to you (too big to send over my email)....No promises though....

2004 Draft Day 1
Well draft day has come and gone somewhat. The first 18 rounds were sifted through on Monday with some pretty suprising results.
Rice had all three of their Big 3 go in the first 8 picks which is insane. The order of them was Humber, Niemann, & Townsend but if it was my million+ dollars to be spent I would list them as Niemann, Townsend, Humber.....but it's not.

It's interesting to note that 6 of their 20 picks were Big XII players and that 7 of their first 8 players taken were either on our roster or on a team that we faced during the season (OU, t.u., South Alabama, Missouri, UCLA).texas got hit pretty hard with 7 players taken plus an additional 5 big recruits (2 in the first round and 2 more in the 3rd round).
I was a bit wrong on Cory because last week I said that I couldn't imagine him going lower than he went last year....he did by 16 slots. I didn't think about it at the time but he had a bit of leverage last year with the option of coming back to school so that might have tempted the Padres to take him earlier than they wanted to in order to lure him out of school.
The supplimental 1st round was pretty exciting for me and so was the Cubs getting one of my favorites, Sam Fuld of Stanford, all the way in the 10th round.

Struck out back in the 3rd. Well, for the second inning in a row, Chuck, we've loaded the bases. We trail, it's 5-3. Humber working on a first pitch to Ruggiano. Fly ball back to right field it's going back still going back and it's...OH MY....HOME RUN.....HOME RUN (you can hear the announcers leaping up)
Chuck Glenwinkle: Ruggiano fast ball on the outside corner. Drives it the other way grand slam home run. It's given the Aggies a 2 run lead here in the bottom of the 8th and there's the haymaker Dave South.

Dave: 7 to 5. Texas A&M....Here comes Wayne Graham out of the dugout to talk to Phillip Humber. The bases now are empty and Ruggiano has hit the grand salami here. A home run for his 3rd of the season...(crowd)....OH MY....(crowd)....Chuck he just went opposite field....(laughter)....wow....(laughter)....Bill Byrne in here with us right now....(inaudible)....well, we still got the 9th inning here now folks we'll see what happens.

If it's behind anything it would be the 2001 t.u. game at Olsen Field, but to be honest, this might take the cake. Now that I think about it, this is the second greatest sporting event that I've ever witnessed behind only the 2002 A&M v. OU football game.
First off, Jason Meyer was simply amazing. He threw 53 pitches on Friday night and came back on Sunday afternoon to shut down Rice for a very good portion of the game. I told Pat after the 6th inning that we might have seen the end of Jason Meyer for the day, but Jason came out for the 7th. Both of us (and the people next to us and behind us) were just saying, "Please get 3 more outs....Please get us just 2 more outs....Come on Jason, just one more out, come on" We wished for one out too many because he got the first 2 outs without much damage (an E5) but then gave up the 2-R HR to Clay Reichenbach. He got out of the inning with the score tied, which could have been much worse.
Jason came back out for the 8th inning but made his exit to a roar of applause after a BB and a sac bunt. His lines for the weekend looked like this:

It also amazes me that the 3 Ws the Ags pulled off went to Dan Donaldson, Justin Moore, and Kyle Nicholson.Ruggiano's GS in the 8th was obviously HUGE (it even made SportsCenter's Top 10 plays of the day at #7), but my own personal AB of the day goes to Matt Alexander. In the 6th inning Austin Boggs' legs gave out on him mid-AB due to cramps (it was HOT during both games). Matt Alexander (and his .153 season BA) stepped into the box starting off with a 2-2 count against Josh Baker and slashed an RBI double down the RF line, giving the Ags the lead 2-1.
Pat's birthday was on Thursday, so for his present I bought him tickets for all the games this weekend. Turned out to be a pretty good present....
As great as game 2 was, game one should not be forgotten amidst the celebration.

The first thing was we had to field our positions very well, which we definitely did (I think there were 2 Es on the day). The second was that ZachJack had to bring AT LEAST his "B game" to the yard".
Well, Zach one upped me and I was still wrong (for G1 at least). The only problem with that is that Jeff Niemann one upped Zach.

For Niemann I had him at 118 but I missed the entire 6th inning because I went down to get a sno-cone and we went 3 up and 3 down and it was the middle of the 6th by the time I got back. For ZachJack I missed Paul Janish's 1st AB, Reagan's 2nd AB, & Morris' 4th AB. Excluding those 3 ABs I had Zach at 124 pitches.The thing that amazed me the most was how Rice didn't have but one or two solid hits off Zach. Everything was either a nubber or off their hands and just fell into the OF.
There were a couple of ABs in the game that I thought were pretty significant (Infante should have caught Austin Davis' 1B in the 1st inning in the air, should have bunted with Mavroulis in the 4th inning) but there isn't anything anyone can do about them now.
Overall I was very impressed by both Niemann and Jackson. I hope that both of them raised their stock for tomorrow's draft.

I wanted to point out 2 or 3 things that I observed during the weekend before adjourning this.First of all, I think that Rice's fans simply aren't very good. I would say that 80-85% of the Rice fans that were at the games were former students which would mean that only 15-20% were current students. That number might even be high. I would say that the Aggie current student to Rice current student ratio was pretty close to 3:1. Also, with regards to Rice fans as a whole, get loud....don't use those little noise maker clappers. That's just lame.
The stadium is very nice at Rice, but PLEASE make more exits. They have between 4,000-5,000 people trying to exit through 2 gates that are one person wide.
If the Aggie fans sitting in KK Row 8 Seats 14, 15, 16 & the couple from KK Row 7 Seats 13 & 14 are reading this we enjoyed sitting with you guys. You knew your stuff and you were pretty entertaining (I watched the replay and the Ruggiano GS went over the Hospitality Food Service sign in RF).
If the "I'm holier than thou", smart-ass Rice fan from Section LL Row 6 Seat 1 is reading this, I want you to know that you were about one more Aggie I.Q. comment from getting an eagle and the words "Texas A&M University '04" stamped in the side of your big fat head.
I hope your fancy loafers gave you a really weird tan line.....

The Ags pretty much swung the sticks today behind great pitching. That usually leads to big W's and that's exactly what happened. In the TSU game, Justin Moore stepped in HUGE and threw a great 6.0 innings after Marlatt had to come out with back spasms.
Unfortunately, Rice took care of their business beating, and thus eliminating, both Lamar & TSU to force their way into Championship Sunday.
The first game today is at 1pm and if the Ags take it, then we're going to the Super Regionals....if we don't win it we play Rice again at 4pm and the loser of that one goes home for the summer.

I don't think he'll play tomorrow....but his name is "Grit Man" so we'll have to wait and see.In the 1pm game the Aggies will start Zach Jackson and Rice will start Jeff "Big Dutch" Niemann. In theory this should be a very well pitched game, but both pitchers have struggled in their last couple of starts.
If we play two games today and Rice doesn't have to use him to stay alive in G1, Josh Baker should start. I'm not sure who A&M has penciled in, but I could see Doug Frame taking the hill. Ray only threw ~20 pitches on Saturday morning and I've heard that Jason Meyer might be available for a couple of innings if we have to have him. Who knows? That's what makes this the postseason!
Hopefully the Ags can continue their 13R/game average that they've been putting up so far, but realistically we need to jump out as quickly as possible and play solid defense.
One thing that I might pass along is that I noticed Cory Patton seemed to be favoring one of his legs when he was running home after his double in the TSU game. He looked like he was limping even more severely in the dugout. He was replaced by Justin Ruggiano but I don't know if it was because of this possible injury or because of the score. Hopefully he's going to be OK and I just read into it waaaaay to much.

For those of you not able to get out to the park you can watch the games for FREE on Owlvision. You have to set up a user name but it's all free for the tournament and I think it's pretty good (I watched the continuation of our G1 on it as well as the Lamar/Rice game yesterday morning). I can safely say that it's definitely better than having to suffer through a White Sox game on WGN....
